WELCOME HOME

There is somebody on the door of my life.
Is it you Ms. Anxiety or Mr. Depression this time?
Before you enter, switch on the lights
Because it’s been dark a little while
Don’t wisecrack, I know it’s not my wife.
She warned me not to open the door
But I guess you people are known
So welcome home!

Ms. Anxiety says ” Before you open the door, let’s talk more
I guess you’ve made new friends
Mhmmm…the ones your wife recommends
Let’s see till where it extends ”
Inside of me wants to roar
But I still talk through the door.
She says, ” We’re lucky to tell you that we’re blessed with children two
Their names are kept by Mr. Depression
One is misery and other regression.
Won’t you welcome four of us inside?
Or your feelings for us died?
Once we promised we’ll live together forever.
Oh! So you lied. ”

I smirked and opened the door,
I remember these faces
We’ve been together to places…
Oh, here’s my BRIDE
My only guide
Before you ask
HAPPINESS is her name
and we are suffice.

My bride asks to them, ” Would you wait for dinner?
Cuz I am already the winner.
And yes, she was always standing on the door
But I ignored
My dear, Welcome home!

  1. Hey Shrankhala, I reckon this is a great attempt. The way you have personified the journey and the struggle with depression, anxiety, and their consequent effects is commendable. Numerous interpretations can be built up which also creates room for the readers to dwell within the depth of the poem. Here, the house has served as a symbolic meaning of the caged mind and the struggle it had to go through to finally house a wife of ‘happiness’. Moreover, the poem doesn’t merely represent the pain and the trauma but indulges in a fortunate reality that is inevitable for all who struggle with psychological disorders.

However, there are a few pointers I would like to convey. One of them is to use more metaphors as they create a layer of complexity which adds greater depth to the poem and even challenges the readers to make use of their interpretations. Another would be to stray away from using rhymes sporadically throughout the poem as the compulsion to maintain a rhyme makes one compromise on the right choice of words which are imperative in communicating the essence of the poem. Moreover, avoid using informal terms such as ‘ Mhmmm’, ‘Cuz’, etc. Even though poetry is for everyone, using informal jargon doesn’t help in upholding the quality of content one has to offer and can often create a mental block while reading.

However, overall it was a creative way of communicating the contemporary issues related to mental health and was quite refreshing to read as well. Keep writing and all the best!

  2. The personification of the various states of mind is artful. I particularly appreciate the smooth rhyming and flow of the poem. At the same time, I believe, the poem could thematically and structurally benefit if you put a little more imagination into coming up with images. Fresh poetic imagery could really add to the element of personification you have adopted here.

  3. Hii i am vandita. This poetic composition reflects a deep exploration of emotions and inner struggles, personifying anxiety and depression as unwelcome visitors at the door of the protagonist’s life. The piece encapsulates the conflicting thoughts and emotions associated with these experiences, ultimately embracing the concept of happiness as the protagonist’s true guide.

Upon reviewing the composition, I find it to be a poignant and thought-provoking expression of the human experience. The use of personification adds depth and allows for a relatable portrayal of anxiety and depression as unwelcome guests seeking entrance. The dialogue between the protagonist and Ms. Anxiety, as well as the mention of Mr. Depression, effectively conveys the internal dialogue and negotiations that often occur when faced with these emotional challenges.

The imagery of darkness and the request to switch on the lights evoke a sense of yearning for clarity and understanding. The acknowledgment of the protagonist’s wife’s warning highlights the internal conflict and the struggle to resist the pull of anxiety and depression. The subsequent decision to welcome them home suggests an acceptance and recognition of their presence, perhaps as a way of acknowledging their role in shaping one’s experiences.

The introduction of the protagonist’s bride, named Happiness, offers a contrasting perspective and serves as a reminder of the positive and guiding force in their life. The juxtaposition between the unwelcome guests and the presence of happiness adds depth to the narrative and emphasizes the importance of finding balance and contentment amidst life’s challenges.

Overall, this composition effectively explores the complexities of emotions, the internal struggle with anxiety and depression, and the power of happiness as a guiding force. It engages the reader through its vivid imagery, dialogue, and emotional depth, leaving a lasting impact and encouraging reflection on the human experience.

  4. The poem is simple yet powerful . The poet tried to depict the struggle and the journey a person has to go through when anxiety and depression enters in one’s life and how one struggles to find happiness as his wife which is permanent and which does not allows the anxiety and depression to stay for a long time. The poet has personified anxiety and depression and tell us how it enters in our life through the doors in our mind and make it chaostic. Here the house symbolises the caged mind which suffers alot with the coming of anxiety and depression but how at last he struggles and finally finds happiness.
I would suggest to use more metaphores which will add greaterdeapth to the poem and will make it easier for the readers to understand it . I believe that the readers will be able to relste more if the poet will be able to attach some personal traumas which she went through which will show the inspiration of writing this poem.
Overall the poem is very creative . The way of communication in the poem is very new and creative and shows the wider imagination of the poet . It is a great way to communicate about the contemporary issus related to the mental health and was quite new and refresing to read .

  5. This poem is an exploration of emotional turmoil.
I find it mesmerizing that through your words you take us into the intricate realm of emotional struggles, personifying anxiety and depression as unwelcome visitors who persistently knock on the door of life. With a touch of vulnerability and introspection, the poem takes us on a journey through the complexities of the human mind and the constant battle against inner demons. The use of personification creates a relatable image, making the abstract concepts of anxiety and depression tangible and recognizable.
Amidst the darkness that has settled within, the protagonist’s plea for illumination carries symbolic weight. They acknowledge the need to confront these emotional states with clarity and self-awareness. There’s a sense of resignation and acceptance as they sarcastically welcome their unwelcome guests, suggesting a long-standing relationship with anxiety and depression. The personification adds depth to their experiences, illustrating how anxiety and depression can weave their way into one’s life, often accompanied by a sense of inevitability.
The voice of the protagonist emerges, revealing a struggle between resilience and vulnerability. While anxiety and depression attempt to claim dominance, the protagonist maintains a degree of resistance, speaking through the safety of the door. This back-and-forth dialogue reflects the internal battle faced when trying to navigate and understand these emotions. However, a turning point occurs with the mention of a bride, Happiness. Suddenly, a shift in tone and atmosphere takes place. Happiness becomes a beacon of light and stability, providing a counterbalance to the chaos caused by anxiety and depression. The juxtaposition of these characters demonstrates the power of positive emotions and the potential for healing and growth.
In a poignant twist, the protagonist chooses to welcome all four of these emotional experiences into their life, recognizing that they are an integral part of their journey. The acknowledgement of their presence signifies a certain level of acceptance and understanding. It is a testament to the human capacity for resilience and the ability to find beauty even amidst struggle.
The poem concludes with an invitation to a shared meal, offered by the bride, Happiness. It emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and embracing all facets of our emotional spectrum.
Overall, it was very creative and a great effort. Well done!
