Fire and Ice by Robert Frost

Robert Frost in his poem ‘Fire and Ice’ has metaphorically connected fire and Ice with human emotions. The poem begins with a kind of polite difference of opinion of anonymous groups, wherein one believes the world will end in fire, whereas the other believes it will end in ice. This answer could again differ when we analyse from the religious or scientific perspective. At a literal level, ice and fire are both ways the human species could be extinguished. Any natural calamity with reference to this can be the cause of destruction and ruin. In other contexts, fire and Ice also represent different kinds of human emotions. Emotions like anger and frustration are related to fire, whereas hatred and indifference are related to ice.

नजदीकियों का पता नहीं
दूरियां ऐसे लिपटी है मुझसे
रोना था फिर भी
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
बीत जाता है वक्त
खर्च जाता है दर्द
कैसे कीमत लगाउ में
उधार है मेरा प्यार जिस दिल से
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
मित ते नहि मिट ती
ये कैसी रिवायत है
चाँद को पल भर न देखा हो जिसने
ये कैसी आदत है
लौट कर सुकून आया ही कहां हैं
घडी भी ये कहती हैं प्यार से
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
वफाई का कुछ अलग ही खेल है
वफ़ा भुल करती नहीं
बेवफा भुल मानती नहीं
ये कैसी उलजन है हुजूर
दूरियां भुल सेहती नहीं
सिमित था प्यार उस धड़कन में
आज दिल की उम्र देखी जाती है हर कदम से
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
आज भी कुछ होता है
सच बोलु तो
धड़कने आज भी तेज होती है
सच बोलु तो
मुस्किल है
चोट पर चोट खाना
अब दर्द तो हमारे ज़हन में हैं
सच बोलु तो
वाकिफ हु में उस नजर से
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
राहें पहचान गय हु में
कौन कहां ले जाएगी
प्यास लगी ही नहीं
फिर कैसे बुज जाएगी
अधूरी छूट गई थी में
फिर आज शाम कैसे पूरी हो जाएगी
दिन आज भी ढलता है उसी आराम से
कैसे सबर होता उस वक्त से ||
