The story of us

Bottles flow and tempers grow,
broken shards painted red,
bitter niceties won’t fix the bruise,
the hurt runs deep, won’t call a truce,
lived in delusion, you never cared.

I bled into your lap, said “have mercy.
my tears test your patience,
I hear faint footfalls leaving my station;
That warm face, those cold eyes,
I weep and weep, till a part of me dies.

My cries percolate through the walls,
all I hear is the deafening silence,
realization crept in, it was just a dalliance.
It was an Autumn day you ruined,
you leave us in ruins, saying, “duty calls”

I still see your spirit in polaroid,
still see pieces of us in the movies,
I still preserve the scars you gifted me,
roses still smell like you,
their thorns still piece like you.

  1. “The story of us” is a poem describing an abusive relationship delicately.
“Bottles flow and tempers grow” is a heartbreakingly beautiful way of setting the melancholic tone of the poem. Skillfully, the verse captures the visual imagery and the sensitive theme behind it.
The randomized rhymes hint to the way the poem’s melody is broken. Overall it is a perfect encapsulation of the complicated human behavior of cherishing and even romanticizing something perilous to them.
